What is it?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitzation and Reprocessing and was developed by Francine Shapiro in 1989 (read this for more) to help people heal from trauma and PTSD. EMDR therapy helps people reprocess a traumatic or adverse life event and enables new information processing, new learning, elimination of emotional distress, and development of cognitive insights. This approach utilizes an external bilateral stimulus (eye movements, hand tapping, or audio stimulation) while a person completely processes the trauma, upsetting experience, or chronic stress.
EMDR therapy is a very well researched approach to treating PTSD and diffusing the stress and anxiety brought on by past traumas and negative life experiences. When these kinds of events remain unprocessed in the memory, they can trigger excessive emotional reactivity. I believe that the brain has a natural tendency towards healing, given the supportive conditions, and EMDR therapy facilitates the completion of this type of healing for the brain and for the mind.
I am certified through EMDRIA as a provider of EMDR.
How does it work?
EMDR therapy is a holistic approach that uses Adaptive Information Processing to aid people in completely processing disturbing life events or traumas. In addition to the initial history taking and preparation for processing, I spend considerable time teaching people to develop positive resources for anxiety management, relaxation, and emotional regulation.
When the client is feeling ready to move forward, we collaboratively choose an appropriately related target memory or chronic life experience to process. The bilateral stimulation is used while the therapist guides the client’s recollection of thoughts, visual images, emotions and body sensations related to the memory or trauma. Through this process the client is supported in completely processing the distress which helps to diffuse the emotional reactivity. It is theorized that EMDR therapy facilitates the accessing of the traumatic memory network, so that information processing is enhanced, with new associations forged between the traumatic memory and more adaptive memories or information.
In essence, healing occurs through a sort of neural integration of these various mental processes.
Throughout EMDR therapy, as with all of my work, I make a concerted effort to move at a safe emotional pace for the client. All along the healing process, the positive resources are utilized to reinforce my client’s ability to self regulate and self calm.
