What is it?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitzation and Reprocessing and was developed by Francine Shapiro in 1989 (read this for more) to help people heal from trauma and PTSD. Natural Processing (NP) was developed by Craig Penner in 2014 and integrates a somatic (body awareness) approach to help facilitate sustained awareness and increase resilience. Together, these approaches utilize the bilateral stimulus (eye movements, hand tapping, or audio stimulation) while a person completely processes the trauma, upsetting experience, or chronic stress.

EMDR therapy is a well researched approach to treating PTSD and diffusing the stress and anxiety brought on by past traumas and negative life experiences.  When these kinds of events remain unprocessed in the memory, they can trigger excessive emotional reactivity.  EMDR and Natural Processing therapy facilitate the processing that reduces the emotional reactivity and develops a more adaptive internal response.

I am certified through EMDRIA as a provider of EMDR.

 How does it work?

In the beginning, after gathering some personal history, time is spent helping the client learn to recognize how their nervous system functions at times of stress and relaxation. I integrate an approach known as Natural Processing (NP) to help the client understand how distress and calm show up in their bodies.

When the client is feeling ready to move forward, we collaboratively choose an appropriately related target memory or chronic life experience to process.  Bilateral stimulation is used while the therapist guides the client’s recollection of thoughts, visual images, emotions and body sensations related to the memory or trauma.  Through this process the client is supported in completely processing the distress which helps to diffuse the emotional reactivity.

In essence, healing occurs through a neural integration of these various mental processes.

Throughout EMDR therapy and Natural Processing, as with all of my work, I make a concerted effort to move at a safe emotional pace for the client.  All along the healing process, the positive resources are utilized to reinforce my client’s ability to self regulate and self calm.
